Bill Clinton Came to Campus

At a conversation held at Brown University’s Pizzitola Sports Center on Tuesday, April 26, Clinton spoke about global politics, climate change, writing and music.

Earlier this week Bill Clinton came to campus as this year’s Casey Shearer Memorial Lecture speaker. My colleague Jill Kimball wrote an excellent story on his talk. Clinton’s talk ranged in topic from Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin, China, AIDS, a life in politics and playing the saxophone.

Haile Farm Preserve hike (and some bread)

On our quest to find all the RI Walks creates, we checked out the Haile Farm Preserve trails. Oh boy, they didn’t disappoint. Campbell found a spotted a bunch of cool things along the hike including some animals.

We saw a spotted turtle along one of the trails. These little buddies are a threatened population due to habitat loss. It was super cool to see one out and about

We mainly stayed to the Dick Hallberg Trail (Green Trail), but the little branches that lead to the cove seemed really interesting as well.

Uncovering an epidemic: Student journalists and data scientists chronicle Rhode Island’s opioid crisis

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tracy Breton (standing), and Brown students Li Goldstein, Olivia George and Gaya Gupta (left to right) review files at the Rhode Island Judiciary Records Center.

My colleague Kevin Stacey wrote an excellent article on the work of professor Tracey Bretton and a class of journalism and computer science students who produced a series of stories exploring the opioid epidemic across Rhode Island.

Kevin writes: “Over the course of nearly two years, the team of 17 students dug deep into datasets acquired from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Providence Police Department, Rhode Island Judiciary and more than a dozen other sources. The work uncovered patterns of overdose deaths across Rhode Island, documented the flow of opioid medications into the state and revealed new details about how the criminal justice system deals with opioid use disorder. The data-driven pieces were combined with personal stories of real people impacted by the epidemic firsthand — a woman who made the journey from addiction to advocacy, or people who found themselves raising their grandchildren after losing their own children to addiction.”

Weekend Fun-Times

Campbell and I spent Saturday and Sunday bopping around town. We checked out the Space Transformation Station Library Situation, drew a ton, played some basketball, ate egg burritos, a whole bunch of fun stuff.

Brown Match Day 2022

I’ve worked at Brown for over six years now, but making images during match day has always eluded me. Not this year. I had the opportunity to make some images at the first in person match day since the pandemic began. It’s an interesting marker, because it was the first big event that the medical school canceled back in 2020, as the pandemic took hold.

The family of Sachit Singal was ecstatic over his match with Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s internal medicine residency program. His goal is to specialize in cardiology, like his sister (far right), Dr. Sanchita Singal Parulkar, who graduated from Brown in 2013 and received her M.D. from the Warren Alpert Medical School in 2017.

My colleague Corrie Pikul, Senior Writer for the Life Sciences here at Brown, wrote a lovely piece about the experience.

So many smiling faces, so much cheering, crying, hugging and overall emotional being shown. What an experience for these future medical professionals.

Spring has sprung

The bug and I took a quick walk down to the pond to see what we could see. The evening light was to good to pass up. We found some mallards, nice light pockets and a couple flowers.

We saw some flowers finally after the Spring Equinox happened Sunday.

Daffodils!

Spring Swing

Members of the Brown Aerial Acrobatics group performing on the Main Green. The warm temperatures and beautiful weather packed the common space as students took in the fresh air.

Brown Venture Prize Pitch Night

Zahra Fayeq and Maryam Khademi

I had the privilege to make a few portraits of Zahra Fayeq and Maryam Khademi, two of the 15 Afghan students who found their way to Brown University after leaving Afghanistan abruptly in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power.

Zahra Fayeq (left), Maryam Khademi (right) and 13 other young refugees from Afghanistan are gearing up to study politics, economics and public health during the spring semester

Remote Salsa Lessons and Working from home

As a photographer, these last few months have been very interesting. I’ve spent a lot of time coming up with ways to be productive and useful with my team. Part of that is looking for stories. Another part is going back to some video editing.

It’s interesting trying to produce video content without being able to gather anything other than screen capture. It’s been fun and trying at times, but I’m grateful to be able to hear and share stories of this community, like the one above.

STEAMrave

Last weekend, @brown_steam partnered with @production.workshop, Brown’s only completely student-run theatre, to create an immersive art show featuring video works submitted by a diverse group of Brown and @risd1877 students. ⠀

Zev Izenberg ’20 and Mariel Rosic ’20.5, members of the production team, described the space as an art nightclub that at its core is an “exploration of the mutability, distribution and disembodiment of identity and art in the digital age.”

While inside the Downspace at the Production Workshop, students had the ability to interact with multiple immersive digital projections and interactive sensors giving each person a unique experience.

“With #STEAMRave, the STEAM team attempts to rewire digital identity and model a new kind of technological society through experience,” Izenberg and Rosic said.
